Manchester United are ‘gradually progressing’ on a deal for Real Madrid star Raphael Varane, according to reports. The Red Devils have already reached an agreement over Jadon Sancho. And the France international could be set to follow the winger to Old Trafford.

Manchester United are a club ready to act big this summer.

The Glazers know they have no choice but to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer huge backing in the transfer market, especially after the European Super League debacle.

Sancho is already the first signing in the bag, with United agreeing to pay £72million for the winger.

That makes him the third most-expensive recruit in the club’s history, with only Harry Maguire and Paul Pogba costing more.

United are determined to land Varane next, with the Real Madrid star being eyed to partner Maguire at the back amid concerns over Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe.

And the Manchester Evening News say they’re ‘gradually progressing’ over a deal for the Real Madrid star.

Sir Alex Ferguson tried to land the France international 10 years ago, scouting Varane extensively when he was strutting his stuff for Lens over in his homeland.

But United ultimately missed out, with Zinedine Zidane intervening and ultimately enticing the centre-back into moving to Spain instead.

A decade on, however, and the Red Devils are confident.

They know Varane is keen to pursue a new challenge elsewhere after 10 successful years in Spain where he’s won three La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns.

Los Blancos have already lost Sergio Ramos.

And Varane could be next, with United hopeful he’ll sign on the dotted line and beef up their defence next time out.

The club’s spending isn’t expected to end there, with Kieran Trippier also being eyed.

United saw Alex Telles coax new life out of Luke Shaw following his arrival from Porto 12 months ago, with the England international going from strength to strength ever since.

And they believe the potential arrival of Trippier can do the same to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who walks into the side unopposed at the current moment in time.

United also want a central midfielder.

And though they’ve been heavily linked with Declan Rice, it’s Rennes star Eduardo Camavinga who appears to be the club’s top target for that area.

United are primed to meet the 18-year-old’s entourage this week.

And despite Paris Saint-Germain being the teenager’s preference, the Red Devils still believe a hijack can be possible.

Meanwhile, regarding Varane, former United star Nicky Butt recently expressed a belief the centre-back would be a good addition to Solskjaer’s team.

“For me, next season has to be about getting some silverware back in that trophy cabinet for Manchester United,” Butt said.

“It’s about getting the right players who will allow you to challenge for trophies.

“It’s a winning club, so we can’t go this long without silverware.

“The biggest thing that needs addressing for me at Manchester United this summer is that centre-back position; we need a partner for Harry Maguire.

“It has to be someone that’s going to be compatible with Maguire.

“If you spend the kind of money you did on Harry Maguire, you then have to follow it up by bringing someone in who can play with him.

“He’s the club captain; Victor Lindelof is too similar to him. It needs to be someone with pure, blistering pace, someone who can play out from the back.

“Everyone talks about Raphael Varane. I understand he’s a little bit older than most people would perhaps like, but you just have to go back to the days of Teddy Sheringham.

“I think we bought him when he was 32, and we went and won the treble with him. If Varane is available, then I’d go all out for him.”
