Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been given public backing from his Manchester United bosses, despite the run of poor results the Red Devils have endured since the end of September. But he could still lose his job in the near future if their struggles continue. Express Sport takes a look at the potential progressive managers they have taken a liking to and who they would love to appoint if being in charge elsewhere was no issue to them.

Mauricio Pochettino

Pochettino was heavily linked with the United job when Solskjaer temporarily replaced sacked manager Jose Mourinho in the second half of the 2018-19 season.

However a move never sufficed, and the Argentinian departed Tottenham after a poor start to the following season.

He now manages at Paris Saint-Germain, and it would be a surprise if he was to leave a star-studded squad including Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

However, with rumours that the players are less than impressed with Pochettino, a move to United in the future is not completely unrealistic.

Thomas Tuchel

United chiefs will be looking at Chelsea’s successes with envy after Tuchel moved to west London in January.

Having taken over just four months prior, Tuchel won the Champions League with the Blues to write his name in folklore even after such a short spell.

Sitting top of the Premier League – most importantly with a defensively astute side, something United lack – there will be fans cursing why a move for Tuchel wasn’t sanctioned upon his sacking from PSG last season.

Chelsea are in a good position to win silverware again with Tuchel this year and the German is unlikely to ever be a United boss.

DON’T MISS

Max Allegri

Six-time Serie A winner Allegri is deemed as one of the top bosses in the world.

But like Pochettino, United fans will be ruing the decision not to approach him when he left Juventus in May 2019, instead opting for Solskjaer.

The Italian is renowned for being able to use various formations, something which United could benefit from due to their predictability.

However, having rejoined Juventus in the summer, that is a ship that has well and truly sailed for the time being.

Julian Nagelsmann

Nagelsmann is considered by many as the most exciting young coach in the world.

Having become Hoffenheim boss in 2016 at the age of just 28, Nagelsmann impressed heavily by steering the club away from the relegation zone and qualifying for the Champions League the season later.

This led to a move to Leipzig where he impressed again, before a world-record managerial transfer fee of £22million brought him to global powerhouse Bayern Munich, who are top of the Bundesliga under him.

Nagelsmann would have been perfect for United in their quest to become one of the world’s top sides once again. But they missed out and the young manager is unlikely to be going anywhere any time soon.
