Manchester United have long insisted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is safe. But the brutal reality is that, after their emphatic defeat to Liverpool, the Glazers have a big decision to make. The Red Devils are now eight points behind at the top of the Premier League table – and that simply isn’t good enough.

Manchester United went into their Premier League clash with Liverpool on a high after beating Atalanta last time out.

But though they started brightly, it was a dire day for Solskjaer’s side as they fell 4-0 down before half time.

Mohamed Salah dazzled in the first 45 minute, scoring twice, with Naby Keita and Diogo Jota also on target as the Reds ran riot.

And, in the second half, Salah got another before Paul Pogba received his marching orders for a wild challenge on Keita.

With United now going from bad to worse under Solskjaer, Express Sport will now take a look at four possible options when it comes to replacing him.

Antonio Conte

United need a serial winner to bring the glory days back to Old Trafford.

So that’s why Antonio Conte would be amongst the frontrunners if the Glazers choose to sack Solskjaer in the aftermath of this defeat.

The Italian has won everywhere he’s been at, triumphing at Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan over the last decade.

He’s currently a free agent, having left Inter shortly after steering them to the Scudetto earlier in the year.

So United can expect links to Conte to continue for the foreseeable future should they stick, rather than twist.

Zinedine Zidane

Before the match with Atalanta in midweek, there were reports suggesting Cristiano Ronaldo had recommended Zinedine Zidane to replace Solskjaer.

And while the club have denied that, the Frenchman would be another candidate to take over.

Zidane is, like Conte, on the market still after leaving Real Madrid in the summer.

He’d bring an attacking, enterprising style that could coax the best from Ronaldo, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial.

But given his lack of Premier League experience, as both a player or a manager, he’d still represent a gamble.

Erik Ten Hag

On Tuesday night, Ajax rocked Borussia Dortmund.

The Dutch side hammered their German counterparts 4-0, silencing Erling Haaland in the process. Given his talent, that’s no mean feat.

And it was another night where Erik Ten Hag showed what a masterful coach he is, easily getting the better of Dortmund.

The Dutchman has done well to rebuild Ajax over the years, especially given how they usually lose their best players.

And if United want a coach to take them up a level, and get the best of existing talent, Ten Hag may be the right way to go.

Brendan Rodgers

In recent weeks, Brendan Rodgers has been linked with Manchester City.

But if United do choose to sack Solskjaer, it’s possible they’ll make an approach for the Northern-Irishman instead.

Rodgers has rebuilt his managerial career since leaving Liverpool, achieving success with both Celtic and Leicester.

And there’s certainly an argument that he deserves the chance to manage a big team again.

Given United’s plight, they could certainly do a lot worse…
