Manchester United may face two new problems in their pursuit of PSV and Holland star Cody Gakpo. The forward got his third goal of the World Cup as his side defeated Qatar to seal their place at the top of Group A and qualify for the knock-out stages, and has been the subject of interest from Erik ten Hag’s side.
United have been linked to Gakpo since the summer, but the club opted to bring Antony from Ajax to Old Trafford instead for £85.5million. Rumours have persisted ahead of the January transfer window, and after the club terminated Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract following an interview with Piers Morgan where he criticised the club and Ten Hag, plans to sign another forward may be moved forward from the summer to January.
However United could face two new problems to sign Gakpo after his impressive performances at the World Cup. The Manchester side and Leeds were the two strongest rumours in the summer, but with three goals in his first three games at the World Cup he will have no shortage of suitors should the 23-year-old decide to leave PSV in January.
Former England and Chelsea winger Joe Cole claimed that “all the big clubs” in the league will be interested in Gakpo following his strong start to the tournament. “Exciting young player, one I earmarked at the start of the tournament who might do well,” Cole told ITV.
“Scores goals, can dribble, good movement off the ball, all the big clubs in the Premier League will be looking at this kid. He joins an illustrious group, if he gets three goals in three World Cup games, the likes of [Wesley] Sneijder, [Dennis] Bergkamp, he’s not moving in them places yet but he’ll be on his way. Really exciting young player.”
Alongside additional company for Gakpo, United may have to pay a substantially higher fee than what they would have done if they signed the Dutchman in January. There were reports claiming that £30m may have been enough to sign Gakpo in the summer transfer window when the likes of Leeds and Southampton were interested.

However ex-Holland star Sneijder has claimed that United would have to part with £70m in order to bring Gakpo to the Premier League.
“How much he will raise [for PSV] depends largely on this World Cup. If he scores two or three more here, it could be eighty million euros. That’s how it works,” Sneijder told De Telegraaf.
“First he has to finish this World Cup well and then show for another six months at PSV that he really stands out. With his speed and dribbling ability, the English Premier League, where there is a lot of space, suits him best.”
