Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was frustrated with Marcus Rashford in particular during the first half of the Europa League final defeat against Villarreal on Wednesday. Rashford started the match on the left of the front three, with Paul Pogba moving back into a central midfield role.

Villarreal took the lead after 29 minutes, with top-scorer Gerard Moreno poking home from a Dani Parejo free kick.

United struggled to create many opportunities of note as Unai Emery’s side stood firm in defence.

Villarreal kept their lead until half time and Scholes gave his verdict in the BT Sport studio.

The former United midfielder claimed Rashford in particular was showing a lack of patience and urged him to be calmer.

“They haven’t [done themselves justice yet], they haven’t been great, they haven’t really created many chances,” Scholes said.

“Like I say I think they need to be a little bit more patient, Marcus Rashford especially.

“He needs to stay out on that left-hand side. A ball will come to him eventually.

“So many times he’s coming inside, his first touch hasn’t been good, he’s running into people.

“Just stay out there and be patient, your chances will come.”

After the advert break, Scholes once again singled out Rashford as a player who had to do better in the second half.

“They need to be a little bit more patient,” he added.

“Marcus Rashford, especially, he needs to stay out on that left-hand side, the ball will come to him eventually.

“So many times he’s coming inside, his first touch hasn’t been good, he’s running into people.

“Just stay out there, be patient, and your chances will come.”

United drew level shortly after half time, with Edinson Cavani poking home from close range.

Rashford then missed a glorious chance to put his team into the lead, fluffing his lines from only a matter of yards out.

Villarreal won an extraordinary penalty shootout 11-10, with goalkeeper David de Gea missing the vital spot kick.

Ahead of the match, Scholes was full of praise for Cavani after his first season at the club.

“He’s the full package of a centre-forward,” Scholes said of the 34-year-old.

“He works as hard as any player on the football pitch, he’s desperate to get the ball back.

“That’s what you expect from anybody that’s playing, but he’s doing that, a great example to young players and he scores all types of goals as well.”
