Man Utd ‘interested in Frenkie de Jong’ as Erik Ten Hag eyes summer reunion

Manchester United are said to be interested in reuniting their new boss with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Erik ten Hag was announced as the next Man Utd manager on Wednesday following United's hammering from Liverpool the night before as the league chasing reds slotted four past a vulnerable Red Devils side. The news will come as music to fans' ears as the club is said to be eyeing up a move for the former Ajax midfielder.

The current Ajax boss is set to join United this summer, with Sport reporting that the incoming manager will have a £210m transfer kitty to spend on bolstering the fragile squad. The Spanish newspaper also revealed that the club are " interested in bringing in Frenkie de Jong".

The Dutch midfielder could fill the void that Pogba is set to leave as current interim boss Ralf Rangnick confirmed that, as it stands, Paul Pogba is set to leave the red side of Manchester this summer when his contract expires. Although de Jong is reportedly happy at Barcelona, the arrival of ten Hag is said to make all the difference in the eyes of the midfielder.

The sale of the Dutch international could also be good for the Catalan giants as the club look to balance the books following a turbulent 12 months as the club dropped out of the Champions League in the group stages and are clawing their way back into the Champions League places in La Liga.

Since Xavi has taken over from Ronald Koeman, the Barcelona legend has managed to turn the tide of the Spanish club as they sit second in the table despite them falling to 10th in the table when Koeman was sacked. The progress speaks volumes as the club looks to next year when an injection of cash will be expected with the new commercial deal with Spotify.
