American financial investor Carlyle have reportedly submitted a minority stake bid for Manchester United.

According to Sky News, a handful of parties have pitched proposals for investment into the club, which would see the Glazers remain at the helm. Carlyle are claimed to be one of them and are in talks over a "major investment".

Managing assets of more than $370bn (£298bn), they rank amongst the world's largest private equity firms. Their interest in United is said to be serious, with discussions between the two parties having taken place for some time.

The exact details of their proposal, however, are yet to be finalised. There was frustration amongst the Red Devils fanbase this week after the highly unpopular Glazer family welcomed a third round of bidding.

It seems they have so far been left dissatisfied with the various offers that have been tabled, which vary from a full takeover to just investment.

The frontrunners to buy out the current American owners have been Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani and Britain's richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Both have reportedly made offers below the £6billion mark, which is believed to be the Glazers' asking price for the club they bought back in 2005 for less than £800m.

Another bid deadline of April 28 has been set by The Raine Group, the merchant bank handling the sale, with it hoped the process can reach a conclusion before what could be a crucial summer transfer window for manager Erik ten Hag.

The situation rumbling on could jeopardise United's business. On the pitch, Ten Hag's side face a busy end to the season, with the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla and an FA Cup semi-final against Brighton on the horizon.
