Manchester United are reportedly taking steps towards sacking Cristiano Ronaldo after his shocking interview with Piers Morgan. However, the Glazers are reportedly fearful that they will strengthen a top-four rival by allowing the 37-year-old to be a free agent.

Ronaldo has not shied away from making it public knowledge that he is desperate to cut short his homecoming. The Portugal international has insisted that he is being forced out the door at Old Trafford, and his criticisms of the club have only accelerated his exit plan.

According to The Mirror, the Red Devils were prepared to allow Ronaldo to leave in the January transfer window but now want the forward off of the books as soon as possible, relieving them of his £500,000-per-week wages. Though a worst-case scenario is potentially brewing, as Chelsea are waiting to reignite their interest in the former Juventus star. Todd Boehly wanted to mark his arrival at Stamford Bridge by signing Ronaldo, though Thomas Tuchel pulled the plug on the move.

But now the German has left, Chelsea remain keen on signing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. United remain insistent on Ronaldo departing, though they will certainly want the forward to move abroad in hope that they do not rue the decision – but who could he join to please Erik ten Hag’s side?

Sporting Lisbon

Ronaldo was keen to leave United over the summer so that he could play Champions League football, which consequently ruled Sporting Lisbon out of the running to rescue him from the Theatre of Dreams. Though the forward may be willing to sacrifice his shortlist of requirements if it means that he can sign for a club where he is adored by everyone.

Sporting are currently fourth in the Liga Portugal and four points outside of the top two, which qualify for the Champions League next season. However, Ronaldo certainly won’t struggle back in his homeland and his arrival could see them push up the table very quickly.

Real Madrid

For United, Ronaldo returning to Real Madrid is a very preferable resolution to the saga. The forward has shone at Santiago Bernabeu previously and Los Blancos’ failure to sign Kylian Mbappe over the last two windows indicates that they have wages available to splash.

Madrid have lacked depth in the final third so far this season and Karim Benzema’s injury woes could push Carlo Ancelotti into greenlighting a move for Ronaldo if it was a possibility. The La Liga outfit are certain to push for silverware domestically and on the European stage, which will be music to the ears of Ronaldo.

Inter Miami

Lionel Messi v Ronaldo has been the best footballing rivalry in history, and the two all-time greats could combine at Inter Miami. Reports have circulated that Phil Neville’s side are looking to welcome veteran superstars to their ranks, with talks set to open with Messi over the summer, and Ronaldo could become their next transfer target.

The competitiveness of the MLS is rising, though a move to America in January could come a few years too early for Ronaldo given that he told Morgan that he would like to play into his forties. The Portuguese hero is desperate to compete at the very top level and prove that he is one of the best ever, and this move may not do that – despite it being perfect for United.
