Manchester United are halfway to meeting Bruno Fernandes’ desires after extending Edinson Cavani’s contract. The Uruguayan ace has signed on at Old Trafford for a further season amid a scintillating run of form.

Speaking to the official club website earlier this month, Fernandes emphasised the importance of United keeping their best players.

The 26-year-old pinpointed Cavani and midfield partner Paul Pogba as almost irreplaceable members of the squad.

He said: “[Cavani and Pogba] are really important for us and the qualities they have – it is difficult to find on the market for a good price.

“I think everyone knows that the team is growing with their help, and it’s important for us to keep our best players and keep improving as a team.”

Cavani has been directly involved in 10 goals in his last eight United appearances, scoring as many and providing two assists.

His goalscoring form has seen him become a hero among fans, who are now even more eager to return to Old Trafford and watch him in the flesh.

Pogba is enjoying a fine campaign of his own, making 39 appearances so far as he bounces back from an injury-stricken 2019/20 campaign.

The dynamic Frenchman is thriving both as a part of a midfield pivot or as the left winger in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system.

Pogba has commonly featured alongside Fernandes, who re-affirmed that the United squad know the qualities he brings to the table.

“Quality players always bring quality to the team. We all know what Paul and Edi can do for the team. We all know what they have,” Fernandes explained.

“People can have doubts on them sometimes, but we as a team never have. We know what they can bring to us.

“The most important is that everyone knows, it doesn’t matter your place, everyone has something to say.

“The most important thing is the improvement of the team in the last few months, and we still have a lot to improve.”

Whether United can fulfil the second part of Fernandes’ wishes and tie down Pogba to a contract extension remains to be seen.

The 28-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of next season, and he – along with agent Mino Raiola – has flirted with the prospect of a new challenge in recent years.

However, the high morale in the United camp transitioning into good results on the pitch could tempt Pogba to extend his stay.

The Red Devils have already confirmed Champions League qualification via a top-four finish in the Premier League.

After doing the same last season, it’s the first time United have achieved the feat in back-to-back campaigns since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

With second all-but secure, maintaining Pogba’s services this summer would be a tremendous boost in closing the gap to Manchester City next season.

Otherwise, United risk losing their club-record signing on a free transfer for the second time.
