Manchester United reportedly have a ‘serious chance’ of signing World Cup star Cody Gakpo in January if they offer around £43million for his services. The PSV Eindhoven forward is widely rumoured to be Erik ten Hag’s top target as he seeks a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo with his performances in Qatar only increasing speculation.

Gakpo was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in the summer with Leeds and Southampton heavily rumoured to be interested in a move. However, his performances for PSV and the Netherlands this season have attracted the attention of teams further up the table.

He has been one of the Netherlands’ best players at the World Cup so far, scoring three goals in four matches as the Oranje coasted to the quarter-final stage. He is also enjoying an excellent season at PSV, having scored nine times and produced a further 12 assists.

United have emerged as the front runners and could even make a move in January as Ten Hag seeks attacking reinforcements following the acrimonious departure of Ronaldo. Now, football transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has suggested this could be a serious possibility so long as they match PSV’s valuation.

“Cody Gakpo is now showing on the best stage that he is ready for a top move,” he said in a video on his YouTube channel. “Manchester United wanted him in the summer, they are still in talks with people close to the player, but it’s not only Man United.

“There are also other clubs in the race for Cody Gakpo. PSV’s original plan was to let him go in the summer and not in January, but now after this World Cup, if a bid of more than £43m will arrive, there is a chance for Gakpo to leave in January, and I’m told there is a very serious chance.”

The player himself has not been coy about the links to the Red Devils despite his focus remaining largely on the Dutch’s efforts at the World Cup. Earlier this week the 23-year-old spoke about almost joining Leeds in the summer, instead deciding to wait and see if United would solidify their initial tentative interest.

“What comes, will come,” Gakpo told NRC. “I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. If they come, I will think about it. In these decisions too, I seek God’s help. I ask him what I can do best.

“I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I didn’t know anymore. I started having doubts. Leeds United did come. Should I go there? Now I wait and see everything.”
