Manchester United’s decision to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager could be complicated by other circumstances behind the scenes, according to reports. Solskjaer is under increasing pressure as United boss following Saturday’s 4-2 defeat by Leicester City.

United were outplayed by Brendan Rodgers’ side at the King Power Stadium and late goals from Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka ensured they went home with nothing.

Mason Greenwood’s stunning long-range strike had put United ahead, but their leaky defence undermined the away side’s efforts going forward.

United have now kept just one clean sheet in their last 19 matches and have won just two of their last seven games in all competitions.

Their poor form could be set to continue, with Champions League ties against Atalanta, as well as Premier League games against Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City, on the horizon.

Solskjaer signed a new contract until 2024 over the summer and is reportedly safe from the sack at the moment.

The Athletic reports the United board are not wavering in their support of the Norwegian manager, who is approaching three years in the job.

The club’s hierarchy are said to be happy with his work in stabilising the club, increasing the points total and position season on season, bringing through academy players, recruiting well, and restoring a ‘progressive culture’.

The report also highlights another factor which could be working in Solskjaer’s favour.

United are keen to avoid lots of upheaval in important positions and, with Ed Woodward already stepping down as executive vice-chairman at the end of this year, there is apparently ‘a sense’ that finding a new manager ‘would be especially complicated’.

While Solskjaer doesn’t appear to be the firing line at United, he admitted that his side’s performance against Leicester was not good enough to warrant points.

“The goals we conceded were disappointing,” he said. “The timing of them and the way they were conceded.

“We weren’t good enough with second balls and 50-50s – the things that give you the right to win a game of football.

“We couldn’t get them 50-50s turning our way. It says everything when your best player is the goalie, David de Gea, and still we conceded four goals.”

United host Atalanta at Old Trafford on Wednesday before playing unbeaten Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

The fixtures don’t get any easier after that, either, with a trip to Tottenham, another game against Atalanta and a Manchester derby against Man City taking them into November.

It promises to be an important period for Solskjaer, whose side are sixth in the Premier League, five points adrift of leaders Chelsea, after their run of three league games without a win.
