Man Utd have Amad FA Cup final hope as Erik ten Hag makes intentions known

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reviews the West Ham game

Erik ten Hag wants to integrate Amad back into his Manchester United squad before pre-season by having him attend next month’s FA Cup final. United face Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on June 3, aiming to complete the first domestic cup double in the club’s illustrious history.

Amad has shone brightly on loan at Sunderland this season after Ten Hag analysed him last summer and decided a temporary spell away from Old Trafford would better suit his development.

The 20-year-old winger, named the Black Cats’ Young Player of the Season, registered 13 goals and three assists in 37 Championship games, helping secure a play-off spot.

But he looks set to return to United quicker than initially expected after his work on Wearside is done, which could involve two Wembley visits in the space of a week.

According to the Manchester United News, United have invited Amad to travel to the FA Cup final with the rest of Ten Hag’s squad.

The Ivory Coast international has a suit designed by Paul Smith reserved in his measurements so he can be present at the first-ever Manchester derby FA Cup final.

The report claims that Ten Hag wants Amad to settle back into life at United and feel involved in his project before the real hard work starts on the summer pre-season tour of the United States.

He used Amad in four of United’s six pre-season games last year, scoring in Ten Hag’s maiden match at Old Trafford, a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano.

But it has taken a few years for him to adapt to life on English shores after being recruited in a £37million deal by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on transfer deadline day in 2020.

Amad has just nine senior appearances for United under his belt, but he has made strides this term after an underwhelming loan stint at Rangers in the first half of last year.

Ten Hag had the option of recalling Amad in January amid attacking uncertainty in the wake of Cristiano Ronaldo’s explosive exit.

But the Dutchman let the starlet continue impressing at Sunderland, praising him for his progress.

He said: “We consider everything, but I have a little bit of reservation about [recalling Amad] because I don’t want to stop the process. He has made really good progress there, so I’m happy with that.

“But young players need experiences, and when we decide for him to come back, he has to be a player who can compete for the starting XI or, minimum, to come on for a lot of games and make an impact.”
