Man Utd hard man Casemiro left with blood pouring out of mouth after elbow

Casemiro took an elbow to the face as Manchester United ran out 3-0 winners over FC Sheriff in the Europa League.

The Brazil international, known as a football 'hard man', was seen with blood gushing from his face after taking an elbow right on his mouth during the clash.

In what were some graphic images, the former Real Madrid star clashed with Rasheed Akanbi and fell to the floor holding a gash.

United beat the Moldovan club at Old Trafford with Diogo Dalot, Marcus Rashford, and Cristiano Ronaldo each getting goals to clinch progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

After the game, former Red Devils midfielder Paul Scholes suggested that United have improved since the start of the season because of the signing of Casemiro – the holding midfielder they have been crying out for a number of years.

The maestro, who joined United from Real Madrid for an initial fee of £60million in August, scored his first goal for his side against Chelsea on Saturday – heading home in the dying embers of the game.

Despite making his first few United appearances from the bench, Casemiro has started to become a regular for the side, being selected to start each of the Reds' last seven matches – including the game against Sheriff.

"You can see that the stats speak for themselves," Scholes said to BT Sports. "The quality that he has brought to this team.

"When you look at the Real Madrid team, you always seem to think of [Luka] Modric and [Toni] Kroos and their quality, but this fella probably got overlooked in that. I think we are now seeing the real quality.

"I didn't expect him to be as good on the ball, but, obviously, he is. We have seen that again and he links the play just as well as [Christian] Eriksen does, really, with his forward passing and one-touch passing.

"I'm not sure he is going to be scoring loads of goals, but that's not what he is in the team for. I think the real step-up in quality from what we saw at the start of the season to what we're seeing now has made this team a lot better."
