Lewis Hamilton and George Russell discuss celebration plan next to Verstappen

Spanish Grand Prix preview at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have revealed party plans in front of Max Verstappen after securing a double podium finish. The Silver Arrows pair seemed to suggest they would be heading for a celebration in a hilarious exchange in the post-race cool down room.

However, Hamilton and Russell started planning their Sunday night with title rival Max Verstappen sitting just metres away. Hamilton said: “Are you getting on it?”

Russell replied: “I am staying here tonight so why not?” However, Russell appeared to have misheard his team-mate with Hamilton then bursting into a fit of laughter.

Verstappen dominated the Spanish Grand Prix from start to finish as the Dutchman extended his championship advantage.

The win is Red Bull’s seventh successive win and Verstappen’s fifth of the campaign. Meanwhile, Mercedes secured their first double podum of the year after finally getting the better of new challenger Aston Martin.

It comes just a week after the German marque installed new upgrades at the Monaco Grand Prix. However, Russell was left shocked by the team’s pace after battling back from the midfield on Sunday.

Russell explained: “A little bit surprised for sure. Kudos to the team for giving me a great car today. That was a fun race for us – starting from P12 and coming to P3. Hopefully a sign of things to come for us and the team.

“It definitely feels better. You are just putting in those lap times and comparing it to the guys around you – the Ferraris and Astons and you are going quicker and quicker. We know we brought some more downforce to the car and are in a better window, so just happy to be on the podium.”

In the cool down room, Hamilton then questioned Russell how he managed to move through the field so quickly. He asked: “Did you just pass everybody or?”

Russell replied: “Yeah, passed Fernando [Alonso], Carlos [Sainz]. Maybe [Lance] Stroll and [Esteban] Ocon. I don’t know, I can’t really remember now. Passed most on track. I thought it was raining at one point but it was sweat from my head on the visor.”

Hamilton was also pleased with the progress Mercedes had made between races. Speaking on team radio after the chequered flag, he said: “Mega job guys, mega job. Thank you so much to everyone at the factory, continuing to push.

“This is a real showing for all your hard work so thank you.  Let’s keep pushing. Mega job to George as well.”
