Manchester United have been given encouragement in their pursuit of Sergino Dest after Xavi told the Barcelona star to leave, according to reports. Erik ten Hag previously managed the USA international at Ajax. And the pair could be reunited at Old Trafford amid the Red Devils’ desire to land a new right-back before the transfer window slams shut on September 1.
Manchester United are well-stocked at right-back, with the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot and Brandon Williams all on their books.
But with Wan-Bissaka and Williams free to go, the Red Devils are keen to land an upgrade before the transfer window slams shut on September 1.
Dest has emerged as an option for United, having previously flourished under the guidance of Ten Hag during their time in Amsterdam together prior to departing in 2020.
And ESPN say the 21-year-old has been told by Xavi that he should leave Barcelona in pursuit of regular first-team football.
That’s something the Catalan giants can’t provide, with Dest currently down in the pecking order.
Man Utd takeover: The Glazers have five reasons to sell Man Utd
Ahead of pre-season, the youngster had been informed he would be used for cover at left-back. But with Barcelona intending to play a different way, they’re now open to offers.
Barcelona are hoping to raise more funds so they can balance their finances and register new signings such as Jules Kounde.
Kounde has moved from Sevilla, having previously looked set to end up in the Premier League at Chelsea, but the France international isn’t able to play in La Liga just yet.
Dest’s preference would be to stay at Barcelona.
But with the full-back needing to play in order to make the US’ World Cup squad in Qatar later in the year, it’s possible he’ll be on the move.

Man Utd should have sold these five players already
United appear to be frontrunners, especially given the Ten Hag factor, and Dest isn’t the only player on their radar at the current moment in time.
In midfield, they’re confident of landing Casemiro from Real Madrid.
United had, before, been looking at snapping up Frenkie de Jong. However, with the Netherlands international reluctant to join, John Murtough is now looking at Casemiro instead.
And the Red Devils also want a new forward, regardless of what happens with Cristiano Ronaldo amid the 37-year-old’s desire to leave.
It emerged on Thursday that they’d had a huge bid for Antony turned down, with Ajax eager to avoid losing yet another key player as they look to retain their Eredivisie title.

Jamie Vardy is a potential option, despite the Leicester City star approaching the twilight years of his career.
And there have been claims on Friday over a potential return for Danny Welbeck, who previously left United for Arsenal back in the summer transfer window of 2014.
At a time where United are looking to back Ten Hag with more signings, former England star Micky Gray recently slammed the Red Devils for their business, or lack of it, so far.
“It’s an absolute disgrace, they knew they had to recruit in the summer and they’ve left it with 15 days to go in the transfer window,” he told talkSPORT.
“They’ve brought in three players [Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen] in this transfer window and they have not improved Manchester United.

“If anything they’ve gone backwards when they’re supposed to be going forwards.
“Players who are walking through the door at Man United in the last 15 days of this transfer window are going to want top dollar. They know what situation they’re going to find themselves in.
“It’s panic stations. A club like Manchester United getting it completely wrong, it’s an absolute disgrace.
“They don’t know what’s going to happen with Cristiano Ronaldo either. Is he going to stay or is he going to go?
“They need to buck their ideas up and get something sorted out because those supporters are absolutely seething.”
