Man Utd fans tear into Fred ‘like he’s at Powerleague’ after Roy Keane criticism

Manchester United fans were left less than impressed with Fred’s part in Southampton’s goal in the 1-1 draw at St Mary’s.

The home side took the lead in the first half after an off-target Che Adams strike took a big deflection off the Brazilian midfielder to take the ball past a helpless David De Gea.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side levelled the scores through a Mason Greenwood goal, which slipped through Alex McCarthy’s legs, in the 55th minute, to take a point back to the North West.

Roy Keane was amongst the onlookers who were critical of Fred’s efforts in trying to stop the opener.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “When someone comes into your area, you have to be ready to nail him. Fred just dangled a leg. He's unlucky with the deflection but he has to do better.”

Plenty of fans were quick to agree on social media, with plenty questioning why the club haven’t brought in a new defensive midfielder.

Meanwhile, others asked why the 28-year-old is still preferred to other options in the squad, such as Donny Van De Beek.

United supporters also poked fun at another bad moment for Fred during the game, where he fell to the floor whilst chasing down a Southampton counterattack.

One person compared him to a five-a-side player who had just started playing again.

They wrote: “Fred moving like most of us after our first session back at Powerleague from lockdown.”

Should Manchester United stick with Fred or do they need to replace him? Let us know in the comments section.

Fred arrived at Old Trafford from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018 and has had his fair share of critics since then.

In 78 Premier League appearances he has scored three, assisted one and helped to keep 13 clean sheets.

United have been linked with a host of new midfielders this summer, including Ruben Neves, but have yet to add any to their ranks.
