Man Utd fans slam ‘shambolic’ marking with Ramsey given acres of space to score

Manchester United fans were up in arms after Jacob Ramsey was allowed the freedom of Villa Park to give Aston Villa a 3-1 lead.

Having fallen behind early on to a quickfire double from Leon Bailey and Lucas Digne, United found a way back into the game just before half-time through Luke Shaw's deflected strike. And Red Devils fans would have been hopeful that their side could find an equaliser after the interval.

But that hope was dashed almost straight away as Ramsey fired home to restore Villa's two-goal advantage A Villa counter attack saw Ollie Watkins bring the ball out of his own half and out to the left hand side.

He then drove into the box before finding Ramsey, who slotted home in acres of space from just inside the area. The 21-year-old midfielder had enough time to take a touch and have a sit down given the laxity of United's defence.

But he produced a superb first time finish to make it 3-1 to Villa, much to the annoyance of Red Devils fans. One wrote: "Lindelof is a disgrace, what a shambolic marking leading to the third goal."

Another said: "Who is marking Ramsey there……crap." While a third commented: "Why is no one marking Ramsey there? Absolutely pathetic!" And another user asked: "Who the hell was meant to be marking Ramsey?"

Defeat in the Midlands proved damaging for Erik ten Hag's side, who saw Newcastle go four points clear of them after they hammered Southampton 4-1 at St Mary's.

Speaking afterwards, Villa star Ramsey said: "It's been a tough couple of weeks with the old gaffer getting sacked. There has been a lot of tactical work this week and the game plan worked.

"When the new gaffer came in he said it was a clean slate. He gave us a lot of confidence and belief and I think it showed on the pitch. Manchester United have got top players and we knew we were going to be on the back-foot for periods."
