Man Utd fans share ‘different type of protest plans’ against Glazers

Manchester United fans have shared new plans to launch a “different type of protest” for their Premier League match against Arsenal.

Red Devils supporters have long made their feelings clear towards the club’s Glazer ownership. They staged protests before the opening day defeat to Brighton earlier this month and held up banners in the drubbing at Brentford.

But with their protests having fallen on deaf ears, United fan group ‘The 1958’ are retaliating against the club’s ‘embarrassing censorship’. They took to Twitter on Monday to post a statement which highlighted their plans to put greater pressure on the American ownership, before and during the Arsenal clash on Sunday September 4.

The 1958 page captioned the statement: “Details for Arsenal! A different type of protest. Time to show the Glazers that the club belongs to the fans! Be loud. Be visual!”

The statement itself accused the club of requesting Sky Sports to “limit protest coverage” and pressuring social media outlets to “dampen hashtag campaigns”.

Fans estimate the Glazers have taken a whopping £1.1billion out of the 13-time Premier League champions over the last 17 years. That includes a colossal £743million in interest payments on the money they borrowed to buy the club all those years ago.

Debt repayments account for another £147million, while owners' dividends come in at £166million. It has also been suggested that directors could have been paid £55million since the Glazers' bought the club, on top of another £23million taken out of the club in “management fees”.

The 1958 statement added: “The protests are working. The Glazers don’t want the world (and sponsors) to see the fans’ real sentiment. Their time is up!

“We call on all United fans, match going and the non match going fanbase to bring the passion and energy both outside and inside the ground. Let’s see if the club can edit out real fan sentiment when it’s visual and audible all around the stadium!”

It went on to highlight plans to hold up banners all around Old Trafford prior to kick-off as well as inside the stadium. It comes as Erik ten Hag’s side look to make it three wins out of their last three following narrow wins against Liverpool and Southampton.
