Manchester United fans have urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to make a big decision this season. Supporters reacted to Cristiano Ronaldo’s missed penalty for Portugal by calling for Bruno Fernandes to be kept on spot-kicks for the club.
Cristiano Ronaldo completed his return to Manchester United from Juventus on transfer deadline day.
And the 36-year-old is expected to take over penalty duties from his compatriot Bruno Fernandes whenever he is part of the United first team.
But on Wednesday evening it was Fernandes who handed Ronaldo the ball to take a penalty against the Republic of Ireland.
Only for the veteran to fluff his lines and miss the opportunity to set an all-time international goascoring record, with Gavin Bazunu making the save.
Manchester United supporters saw the incident as a forebearer of something to come at their club.
And urged manager Solskjaer to keep Fernandes as the first-choice option.
“Love Ronaldo, but there should be one penalty kick taker in our team and that’s 100% Fernandes,” said one fan.
And another quipped: “Watching Ronaldo miss penalties is something Bruno Fernandes should probably get used to.”
Fernandes scored nine penalties during his debut Premier League season at Manchester United.
Those spot-kicks accounted for half of the playmaker’s 18 total league goals against the 2020-21 season.
But one fan joked that those days could soon be over for the 26-year-old.
“Bruno Fernandes threw that ball to Ronaldo to take the penalty with the look of a man who knew his stat-padding days for his club are over,” they wrote.
