A Manchester United fan has been arrested at the FA Cup final for wearing a football shirt with the name and number '97 not enough' on the back.
Photos emerged before kick-off of a supporter wearing a Red Devils jersey with the number 97 on the back. The words 'NOT ENOUGH' were etched just above.
Anger spread among fans – particularly those of United's rivals Liverpool – that it could be in reference to the 97 fans who died while attending an FA Cup semi-final match involving Liverpool at Hillsborough in 1989.
A Liverpool fan account posted an image of the supporter attending Saturday's final at Wembley Stadium with the caption: "A Man Utd fan at Wembley today. Get this man’s face spread across social media ASAP, he needs to face repercussions."
And the Metropolitan Police's official Twitter account quote-tweeted the original post after the match, confirming that the culprit has now been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence.
"We are aware of this and have worked proactively with officials at @wembleystadium to identify the individual," the police statement read.
"He has been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and taken into custody."
Saturday's final ended in a gruelling defeat for United, who lost thanks to two volleys by Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan either side of a Bruno Fernandes converted penalty.
In winning the FA Cup, Pep Guardiola's side denied their rivals a second trophy this season while securing their own domestic double at Wembley, having clinched a third successive Premier League title in May.
City have the opportunity to match their rivals' historic treble-winning season from 1999 when they face Inter Milan in the Champions League final this month.
