Race-by-race tips and preview for Bathurst on Tuesday

Track Soft 5 and rail out 2m from 1200m to 350m into a cut/away

Race 1 CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (2000m)

We start over the longer trip, and plenty of chances. Metro four-year-old 2. Karaoke King is ready to win deep into the current prep. Has hit the line up to this trip in his last two, making up a tonne of ground in Canberra behind a promising staying type 13 days ago.

Dangers: Honest as the day is long, 3. Portnoy comes through superior provincial formlines, just has a task getting in from the wider draw. Must keep safe progressive metro three-year-old 2. Xcited (also accepted for R2) who launched late to win on debut in Canberra, and draws to get a soft trail right behind the speed; while consistent 1. All About Ollie finished well from last in that same race as the top selection, and is fit.

How to play it: Karaoke King to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1800m)

Weak race for this level, although shapes nicely for three-year-old and impressive debut winner 5. Xcited if he starts here, instead of the opening race for the Bjorn Baker stable. By Savabeel so the extra journey is right up his alley.

Dangers: Capable four-year-old 1. Half Crown is well placed having closed off nicely in his last two against better opposition, especially if the top selection, albeit unlikely, is preferred in the opener. Both 3. Kneze fourth-up; and 4. Spellz, who won a weaker race third-up; can run into the money.

How to play it: Xcited to win; (if scratched) Half Crown to win
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 3 CLASS 1 HCP (1300m)

Another race with little depth in a Heat of the Rising Star, and improving local four-year-old 6. Own The Night is well over the odds deep into the prep. Finished strongly to claim his maiden over a shorter trip three runs back before working home okay in similar races last two. Steps up to this distance at the right time.

Dangers: Warwick Farm-based 1. Packer is the logical threat having run home into a place in his last two in the country, but still with only one win ahead of his 19th start, and has a habit of going around under the odds. Keep safe 5. Heavenly Prophet sneaking down in the weights; while 3. Rupertson on a big weight drop after the claim; heads the rest.

How to play it: Own The Night each way
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES MAIDEN PLATE (1100m)

This all revolves around the Baker-trained runners, and what the market says. Like three-year-old 4. Cyclone Rupert from a soft draw at his third start. Made up plenty of ground from the back on the South Coast 16 days ago, and the form from that maiden is strong.

Dangers: Deep Field-sired stablemate 3. Armageddon is naturally a big watch on debut behind a string of trials, winning the latest at Warwick Farm in good time.

Provincial colt 6. Ever Upward will find this more to his liking third-up; while the third of the Baker-trained runners, debutant 9. Shalaa Magic starts his career off a provincial trial win.

How to play it: Cyclone Rupert to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN PLATE (1100m)

The fillies edition is at the mercy of talented Randwick filly 10. The Seven Seas who resumes off a smart trial win in good time. Never out of the placings last prep against better opposition than this, and blinkers coming off is a show of confidence. Drawn to get cover right behind the speed, and the Merchant Navy stock are going great guns at the moment.

Dangers: Watch the betting on metro filly 9. Super Sprocket who has been on the heels of the winner in her last two.

Yet another one from the Baker team, 12. We Don’t Roam also returns off two strong trials; while 4. Rolene resuming off two trials; and well-bred filly 8. Matronymic third-up; can both add value to trifectas and first fours.

How to play it: The Seven Seas to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 MAIDEN HCP (1300m)

Home track filly 3. Ida’s Rules rates clear on top, and can strike here at her third start. Been right behind the winner so far in two runs tracking the speed, albeit the latest as a raging favourite, but this is weak, and a top country rider is back aboard.

Dangers: Big watch on 1. Wandering Jack who looks over the odds on debut from a soft draw and behind a forward trial.

Include in all exotics honest 8. Fiery Panz who hasn’t been out of the placings in five runs since late last spring, and draws inside.

How to play it: Ida’s Rules to win
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 7 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1400m)

From the same stable as the previous on top selection, 1. De Forerunner can put this lot to the sword dropping significantly in class fourth-up. Fought on strong to finish less than a length from the winner in tougher metro BM 64 grade before being run down late as a hot favourite in country CL2 company 18 days ago. Naturally up in weight for this, but can be ridden with a sit here, and a superior jockey takes over. The one to beat.

Dangers: Rival home tracker 2. Sistrum is over the odds third-up from a soft draw, with blinkers coming off; while 7. Boorowa Girl third-up with a 2kg claim; and 11. Croatian Madame second-up; can fight out the minor end of the prize.

How to play it: De Forerunner to win
Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS: Race 5, No.10. THE SEVEN SEAS
Race 6, No.3. IDA’S RULES
BEST VALUE: Race 4, No.4. CYCLONE RUPERT
