Man Utd face Evan Ferguson snub despite wonderkid ‘idolising’ Rooney
Ten Hag gives Man Utd team news update for Everton match
Manchester United could miss out on Evan Ferguson, who Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi believes can be a ‘European great’, with the Seagulls reportedly confident that the youngster will pen a new contract. That would come as a blow to the Red Devils, whose former striker Wayne Rooney is one of Ferguson’s idols.
Only a few months beyond his 18th birthday, Ferguson already has six Premier League goal contributions to his name this season despite only starting six matches. The youngster also boasts a further strike in the League Cup and three more in the FA Cup.
Born in Bettystown, Ferguson made another statement by recently getting off the mark for the Republic of Ireland, and many have tipped him to enjoy a fruitful career at the top level. De Zerbi is among them, claiming that he can go on to become a great of European football.
Naturally, United want a piece of the action and they are reportedly keeping tabs on his situation ahead of the summer transfer window.

Manager Erik ten Hag and co may ultimately be left disappointed, however, as The Daily Mail claim that Brighton ‘expect’ Ferguson to sign new and improved terms at the Amex Stadium. The striker came through the ranks in his homeland with Bohemians before being snapped up by the Seagulls in 2021.
Ferguson committing his future to Brighton would also come as a setback to Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham, who are all rumoured to be admirers. The teenager snubbing United may come as a surprise to many, given that he admitted to idolising Rooney while growing up.

A childhood Red Devils fan, Ferguson was not even born when Rooney arrived at Old Trafford from Everton, but England’s former record goalscorer went on to consistently find the net for United over the proceeding 13 years.
Despite the possibility of following in his idol’s footsteps, Ferguson reportedly feels that the promise of frequent first-team opportunities at Brighton will be invaluable for his development. He also has the trust of his current manager, De Zerbi, who was hugely complimentary after watching the youngster bag a brace in a thumping win over Grimsby Town last month.
“Ferguson is a special striker,” stated the Italian. “Me and my staff are working to improve him to not only be a number nine and a striker but improve him to be understanding the play – when to receive the ball or when to attack the space and not only one thing – to complete the player, to complete the guy.
“He’s a very good guy and I think that if you work with a clever guy it’s nice because he understands and he improves day by day.”
