Lewis Hamilton to rival Netflix as Brit set to extend TV portfolio

Hamilton opens up on plans to remain in F1 ahead of 2023 season

Lewis Hamilton has revealed more details on his much-anticipated Apple TV documentary set to rival Netflix’s Drive to Survive. The new feature-length documentary was first announced last year but little information on the final project has been released.

Hamilton has now admitted the project will give viewers a whistle-stop tour of his career and “journey”. He admitted it was “strange” to be followed by cameras but wanted to get something down on film to inspire the next generation.

He explained to PitDebrief: “I thought I’d already announced it. Yeah, I’m producing my documentary, along with Apple. It feels strange having a camera pointing around, but it’s really about my life, it’s about my career, and the journey to where I am.

“With the hope of doing what Ayrton Senna’s documentary did for me as a kid. Maybe something new and fresh, hopefully this will be able to do that for the next young kid that’s watching, coming home from school and dreaming of something.

“Hopefully they’ll be able to watch this and be inspired to do something great themselves.”

It could come as a major competitor to Netflix’s highly popular Drive to Survive series which only features brief exchanges with Hamilton as they try to cover all 20 drivers on the grid. The Apple TV show is understood to have been given full access to Hamilton and his team on and off track to tell the full story.

The documentary will also feature an all-star cast of guest interviews to weigh on the Briton. It will be produced by Hamilton and his agent Penni Thow and directed by Matt Kay.

Box to Box Films, who put together Drive to Survive, have also been brought in for the new project. However, Apple TV has yet to confirm a release date for the new show meaning fans will have to wait a bit longer to get a glimpse.

Last year, a statement from Apple TV said: “Hamilton has blazed an uncharted trail professionally, socially and culturally, and transformed the sport on a global scale.

“Coming from a working-class family, Lewis succeeded in a sport where the odds were stacked against him but where his talent shone through, allowing him to dominate the sport for over a decade.

“Hamilton is currently the only Black driver to race in the Formula One series. He embraced what made him different and his rise to the top of his career has made him fiercely committed to using his platform to influence positive change for future generations.”

Alongside the documentary, Hamilton is also working on a Formula One-related movie starring Brad Pitt. Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is also involved in the project with filming at some F1 circuits expected to start this year.
