Man Utd Erik ten Hag can fix transfer mistake and rile Liverpool fans

Man Utd train ahead of Europa League quarter final second leg against Sevilla

Manchester United could correct an eight-year-old mistake by snapping up Sadio Mane this summer, with the Senegalese enduring a tough time at Bayern Munich. Luring in the jet-heeled winger would not go down well with Liverpool fans, who embraced Mane as one of their own during his six-year spell at Anfield.

A long-serving regular under Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, Mane decided to jump ship after a tiring push to win four major trophies last season. Liverpool only ended up with two, and the 31-year-old subsequently signed for Bayern in a £35million deal.

With 11 goals in 32 matches across all competitions so far, things hardly got off to a terrible start for the former Southampton man. But swirling rumours of discontent have intensified ever since he and Leroy Sane’s well-publicised spat earlier this month.

Having fallen to a 3-0 first-leg defeat against Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals, Sane visibly snapped at Mane, who responded by reportedly punching the German in the dressing room.

The winger was slapped with a massive £250,000 fine – believed to be the biggest in Bayern history – and a one-match ban for his role in the incident, although manager Thomas Tuchel explained ahead of time that he would be back in the squad to face City again on Wednesday.

Various reports indicate that the saga could be the end of Mane’s stint at the Allianz Arena, which began less than a year ago. If Bayern decide to pull the plug, they will surely have to take a hit on the original £35m fee due to their lack of leverage.

Putting a high-quality player on the market for a cut-price sum may alert United, who dropped a clanger in the summer of 2015 by trying and failing to sign Mane from Southampton. He joined the Red Devils’ bitter rivals, Liverpool, the following year and scored 120 goals in 269 appearances.

The sight of Mane heading to Old Trafford would surely leave Reds fans livid, given the player’s rich history on Merseyside. The move happening hinges on numerous factors, including whether the Senegalese is cast aside in Germany, whether United would attempt such an audacious move and whether the player would be receptive to an approach.

One thing the two-time African Footballer of the Year would bring to the table is proven Premier League quality. Ten Hag already has Marcus Rashford wreaking havoc on the left flank, but neither Antony nor Jadon Sancho have made the right-wing spot their own.

Compared to other teams, Mane has a relatively modest record when playing against United, scoring twice and assisting twice more across 14 total appearances.
