F1 suffers United States setback as fans slam sport after latest race

F1 2023 season preview as Max Verstappen looks to defend title

F1 fans from across the pond are venting their frustrations following a fifth win in a row for Max Verstappen. The Dutchman is well on his way to claiming a third world title after a convincing Austrian Grand Prix victory, but it’s been far from a rollercoaster season.

With the season nine races in, Verstappen has claimed an impressive seven wins already. His lowest finishes have come in second place behind Sergio Perez, and both of those have been by the narrowest of margains.

If form is anything to go by then this season could go the same way as the previous two – a clear Verstappen victory and a third world championship title in a row. A monumental feat for the 25-year-old.

While many Red Bull fans will be enjoying such an achievement, it’s not been everyone’s cup of tea. Especially fans from across the Atlantic, where the sport is trying to grow. In a bid to develop the sport in the United States, three races are being held on this race calendar – in Miami, Austin and Las Vegas.

Following the news of Verstappen’s latest win, Twitter users, including those in the US were quick to react. “Yawning! still boring on @F1 !@redbullracing always dominates…” one Twitter user wrote following the race, with another echoing: “F1 2023 is very boring. Max in a league of his own.”

“No way another boring F1 race and Max Verstappen win” one fan tweeted. Another agreed with a post reading: “We’ve had plenty of seasons of dominance in F1 but I don’t think any of them have been as boring as this one, headed up by one of the most boring drivers in F1. A hard watch this season.”

It’s not just F1 fans who are finding recent seasons tough to watch. F1 icon Eddie Jordan has also weighed in on the dominance of Verstappen.

Speaking on the Formula For Success podcast, the F1 pundit made his feelings clear on the current season. While Verstappen’s dominance is impressive, Jordan believes it has left the sport becoming a dull watch.

“Max Verstappen will emerge over time to be the greatest driver of all time. He’s that good,” he said.

“I don’t like the last couple of races, I have to tell you. I’m bored to death with him. He’s just that good. He’s making it boring, more so than the Schumacher era.”

The next race in the calendar will see drivers take to the Silverstone Circuit in the British Grand Prix. The last race at the famous track saw Carlos Sainz earn the win with Verstappen in seventh, a challenge that the Dutch driver will surely be relishing given his imperious form.
