Paul Scholes has claimed Manchester United are ‘desperate’ to sign Erling Haaland, but warned Chelsea also have their eyes on the Norwegian. Haaland is being chased by many of Europe’s top clubs, with a departure from Borussia Dortmund expected in the summer.

The 20-year-old has scored 33 goals in 33 games this season, despite Dortmund enduring a disappointing campaign in the Bundesliga.

That means he is incredibly important to Dortmund, having contributed to nearly 50 per cent of their goals in the German top-flight this term.

But while they may be hoping he stays in Germany, the club’s struggles in the league means they face an uphill battle to secure a Champions League spot for next year.

As a result, a host of clubs are interested in his signature, including United, Chelsea and Barcelona, with Haaland’s representatives already believed to be entering discussions with prospective clubs.

Though this is just his first full season as a Dortmund player and the release clause in his contract not being activated until June 2022, it would be a major surprise if Haaland was not on the move this summer.

But the fact there is no release clause means that Dortmund can virtually name their price, perhaps replicating the Jadon Sancho transfer talks last year when they refused to budge on their £100million valuation.

That could cause problems for most of Haaland’s suitors, with club finances being hit hard by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

United failed to find an agreement with Dortmund over Sancho, but Red Devils club legend Scholes believes they will not make the same mistake with Haaland.

“I think they probably would. If it meant getting Haaland, then why not?” Scholes said on BT Sport when asked if United would consider pay a sizeable fee to their man this summer.

“I think it’s about the club that can pay for him though, I don’t think there is too many of them. Real Madrid or Barcelona, all the noises you hear, they probably couldn’t.”

Another club interested in Haaland is Manchester City, who are releasing record goal scorer Sergio Aguero at the end of this season.

Though manager Pep Guardiola has said City will not look to replace Aguero this year, they have continued to be linked with a move for Haaland.

But Scholes believes it is Chelsea not City who are United’s biggest rivals for Haaland, with Timo Werner failing to impress at the Blues.

“City don’t look like they want to pay. To be fair, with Guardiola, they very rarely play with a No.9 anyway, even when he’s had Aguero and Jesus, he’s hardly played them,” Scholes said.

“So is he the type of player Pep Guardiola wants? I’m not sure it is.

“It’s a player United will be desperate for, a player Chelsea will be desperate for. They’re probably the two clubs that would be able to afford to pay that fee.”
