Man Utd decide stance on permanent Jonny Evans transfer after surprise return

Manchester United are giving Jonny Evans the chance to earn a permanent stay at the club, according to reports. The Northern Irishman will continue to feature in pre-season after his appearance against Lyon on Wednesday.

Evans was surprisingly re-signed by United on a short-term deal earlier this week. The three-time Premier League winner had been training with the under-21s in order to maintain his fitness after his release from Leicester.

The centre-back missed much of last season through injury as the Foxes were relegated to the Championship. While waiting for a concrete offer for this season, Evans was handed an opportunity by the Red Devils.

He came off the bench at half-time of the 1-0 victory over French opponents Lyon in Edinburgh. Evans will now travel with an academy squad to San Diego, where a side mostly filled with youngsters will play Wrexham on Tuesday.

The Telegraph reports that United will continue to give Evans a chance. Harry Maguire could leave the club after being stripped of the captaincy.

That would leave Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof as the centre-back options in Erik ten Hag’s squad, with Eric Bailly also set to go. United have not ruled out the possibility of signing Evans on a longer-term deal if Maguire does leave.

United are working on a restricted budget this summer as Ten Hag aims to strengthen in goal and in attack. Evans would be a cheap and experienced option to fill a gap in the squad.

Evans came through the academy at United and had an eight-year spell in the first team between 2007 and 2015. The Red Devils won three Premier League titles, a Champions League and two League Cups during his time at the club.

Ten Hag explained the decision to re-sign Evans on Wednesday. He said: “I know him for a long time, so I know his place was here, in Manchester.

“He came to train with us, to work on his fitness, and when I said: yeah, not all the players are in – internationals are out, still having their break, so I thought it was a good idea to help each other out. Jonny can work on his fitness and he can help us out.

“The level, we know he is a really experienced player but also a very good person, a big personality, and I think he has big authority as well. He will help the young players especially. It is a benefit for both sides.”
