Man Utd cult hero Wes Brown declared bankrupt despite £50,000 wage

Former Manchester United hero Wes Brown has reportedly been declared bankrupt at the High Court. Brown, who supposedly earned around £50,000 per week while playing in the Premier League for the Red Devils, had his bankruptcy confirmed at the High Court on April 12.

HMRC filed a bankruptcy petition against Brown back in February. It was then confirmed by the High Court last week.

The former defender made his debut for United in 1998 and he went on to make over 200 appearances for the club before departing for Sunderland in 2011. A versatile performer who could play at right-back and centre-back, Brown won two Champions Leagues, five Premier League titles and an array of other trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Speaking about his career to All Football, Brown – whose bankruptcy was first reported by the Mirror – said: “My path was a little bit different. I didn’t start playing for a Sunday league team until I was about 11.

“Before that I used to go to Shotokan Karate, trying to build up all my belts, but I failed my black belt twice when I was nine, I think, so I told my dad I didn’t want to do it anymore.

“I only used to play football on the street and then I started at Fletcher Moss. That’s where I was spotted by United. From there I was involved with the national centre at Lilleshall and I signed professional with United when I turned 17.

“[My favourite season was] probably 1998/99, just for the fact that it was my first full season and so much happened. We played against so many fantastic teams, not just in the Premier League, but in Europe too.

“I didn’t play in the latter stages of Europe, from the quarter-finals onwards, but I was involved in the group stages and it’s an experience that, believe me, if it’s your first one, it’s going to be difficult to beat. Probably my best footballing season was 2007/08 when we won the Champions League again, but nothing quite tops the Treble season.”

Brown, who was born in Longsight, Manchester, reportedly split from wife Leanne last year. The report adds that in 2016, they had apparently slashed the price of their house from £4.5million to £2.4m.

The 43-year-old, who retired in 2018, made 23 appearances for England and scored one goal, against Czech Republic in 2008. After leaving United in 2011, Brown joined Sunderland and went on to play for Blackburn Rovers and Indian outfit Kerala Blasters. He had been the only member of the Treble-winning United team of 1998-99 who was still actively playing professional football.
