Manchester United are reportedly eyeing up a sensational swoop for Emiliano Martinez in the summer transfer window. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is well stocked in the goalkeeper department with Sergio Romero not even being able to get into the squad this season.
The 34-year-old had established himself as a quality back-up to David de Gea in recent years, but Dean Henderson’s return to Old Trafford last summer pushed him further down the pecking order.
Romero made it clear that he wanted to find a new club at the start of the campaign to find regular football, but he has remained at United without making a single appearance so far.
Instead, there has been an interesting battle develop between De Gea and Henderson as Solskjaer’s No 1 .
The Norwegian coach made it clear at the start of the season that he saw the Spaniard as United’s first-choice shot-stopper.

And there have been reports throughout the season suggesting that Henderson has grown frustrated at not being given more chances.
Prior to De Gea’s brief return to Spain to be by his wife’s side for the birth of their baby, Henderson had been predominantly restricted to playing in the Carabao Cup or FA Cup.
He had a brief spell in goal in the Premier League for matches against Southampton, West Ham and Sheffield United.
But Henderson would have to wait until recently to get a long run in the side for consecutive matches.
DON’T MISS
He’s kept five clean sheets in his last six matches, including an impressive display in the 2-0 win over Manchester City earlier this month.
De Gea has since returned to training and is in the squad for tonight’s Europa League last-16 second leg tie against AC Milan.
However, it appears as though the 30-year-old is set to be sold by United in the summer transfer window.
According to Football Insider, United are planning to revamp their goalkeeper department with both De Gea and Romero to leave.
And it is claimed that Aston Villa’s Martinez is at the top of their wishlist to provide competition to Henderson from next season.
Another goalkeeper will also be targeted to give Solskjaer three senior options moving forward.
Martinez has impressed since leaving Arsenal for Villa Park last summer, keeping 14 clean sheets in 27 Premier League matches and playing a key role in Dean Smith’s side push up the table.
Villa will unlikely let Martinez leave on the cheap though having paid £20million to sign him last summer.
The 28-year-old signed a four-year contract with Villa, meaning his current deal doesn’t expire until 2024.
