Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick could return to a familiar stomping ground in January as one of his first courses of action at the helm. The German was confirmed as United’s boss for the remainder of the season on Monday morning.
Caretaker boss Michael Carrick seems to have steadied the ship during his short time in charge, capped off with a respectable draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
When United faced top sides during the final weeks of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign, it tended not to end well.
But a wave of new ideas and bold calls, including dropping Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench, have restored some belief in the Red Devils’ ability to grind out results.
Fans will hope to kick on once again when Rangnick takes charge, with work visa issues set to determine whether he will be on the touchline for Thursday’s clash with Arsenal.

Not just known for his exploits as a manager, Rangnick will get the chance to flex his club-building muscles when the January transfer window swings open.
Generally one to take the intelligent solution, the 63-year-old has been tipped by MEN to avoid the big names and make a move for RB Leipzig midfielder Amadou Haidara.
Rangnick himself brought Haidara to Germany in 2019 as a replacement for Naby Keita, and the 23-year-old has been a regular in the German club’s midfield since the start of last season.
According to The Mirror, a £33million release clause stands between the player and his move to Old Trafford, which he has previously described as a ‘dream’ scenario.

“I like United very much and watch as many games as possible. I dream of playing there,” he told Bild in 2019.
Indeed, central-midfield is an area that many view as requiring strengthening at Old Trafford, with Fred and Scott McTominay viewed collectively as a step down in quality compared to other areas of the team.
Haidara may not have the wow factor of some names to arrive at United in recent years, but Rangnick is all about seeking out smart business.
His arrival may signal a shift in transfer market approach, and with a two-year consultancy role lined up after his six-month stint on the sideline concludes, that could be put in place for with the long term in mind.
“They haven’t won the title since he [Sir Alex Ferguson] left,” Rangnick told The Times in 2019.
“At any club, if you cannot get the right players, then you should at least not sign the wrong ones.
“You are in trouble if you do that in one or two or three consecutive windows.
“Club building is about building the right squad by transferring the right players away and having higher than a 50% success rate of bringing in the right players.”
