Manchester United captain Harry Maguire watched on as England won in front of a crowd which fans joked is the best Old Trafford has ever seen.

The Lionesses kicked off their Euro 2022 campaign with a 1-0 win over Austria at the Theatre of Dreams, with Maguire and his Red Devils team-mate David de Gea both in the stands for the game.

Sarina Wiegman's side received plenty of support, with 68,871 in attendance – an all-time record for the tournament. And it led several fans to poke fun at United following their dire season last time out.

One wrote on Twitter: "The atmosphere at Old Trafford is better than it is for most United games!" Another echoed: "Best atmosphere inside Old Trafford for a long time."

"First time there has been an atmosphere like that at Old Trafford," joked a third, while a fourth commented: "Unbelievable atmosphere at Old Trafford……oh wait United aren’t playing."

Maguire himself acknowledged the impressive home support as the Women's Euros got underway, posting a video of the national anthem with the caption: "A winning start – What an atmosphere at Old Trafford. Well done @Lionesses @WEURO2022."

The United skipper's appearance came after a tough day in which he had to explain why he'd 'liked' an Instagram post referencing a report that club legend Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave this summer.

After it had gone viral on social media, Maguire claimed he had done it mistakenly and subsequently removed the like. But it has only increased the negative sentiment towards him from the fanbase.
