Manchester United have been linked with a move to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford for a number of years, with the Juventus forward seemingly always near the centre of the Red Devils rumour mill. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be in the market for a top-class winger this summer as the Norwegian boss looks to build a Premier League title-winning squad ahead of next season.

United are currently two or three players short of being able to overthrow Manchester City for next season’s domestic crown, with a busy summer window expected to be on the horizon for the 20-time champions.

Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho is believed to be the club’s priority target out wide after Edinson Cavani’s decision to pen a one-year extension cooled their interest in landing a new striker.

The addition of a central defender is also understood to be on Solskjaer’s agenda, but a prolific winger would provide United with the attacking nous required to mix it with City at the top of the pitch.

Ronaldo, who is under contract with Juventus until next summer, played a crucial role for the Serie A giants this season with 29 league goals in 32 appearances.

However, the recent sacking of Andrea Pirlo could spell trouble with regards to his future in Italy and allow United to finally engineer a fairytale return to the Premier League.

Massimiliano Allegri is poised to take over the reins at Juventus in the coming days to kick off his second stint as manager, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The 53-year-old has been out of a job since leaving the Old Lady in 2019, but will be reinstated ahead of next season and tasked with leading the club back to the summit of Italy’s top flight.

Despite signing Ronaldo from Real Madrid a year before his departure, it remains to be seen whether Allegri will be looking to include the Portuguese attacker in his plans for the new campaign.

He is believed to have asked Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli to sell the player shortly before he was sacked, suggesting that he could act on his desire to find new suitors for the 36-year-old this time around.

“Get rid of Ronaldo, he’s blocking the growth of the team and the club,” said Allegri, according to Football Italia.

It seems unlikely that United would pass up the opportunity to sign Ronaldo if it becomes clear that an exit could be on the cards.

However, any decision is likely to rest with the player himself, who has previously expressed an interest in returning to Sporting before the end of his career, according to Sport Mediaset.

Meanwhile, former Republic of Ireland international Andy Townsend has urged Ronaldo to snub United and make a surprise move to City in order to maintain his successful legacy.

“He’s unbelievable in the air, which we’ve seen in a Juventus shirt already,” Townsend told talkSPORT in November.

“If he became available and Juve wanted out on him, and Man City needed goals for their team, then I don’t think you should hesitate in going to get Cristiano Ronaldo.

“He’s 35 and I still think he’s got 18 months in him. If he came to Man City and the way they play, I think he could go there and get 25 in his first season.”
