Man Utd coach Benni McCarthy asked about Marcus Rashford’s fine form
Erik Ten Hag on Manchester United and Marcus Rashford's progression
Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy has revealed who is responsible for the upturn in form of striker Marcus Rashford. The Red Devils’ improvement this season has been mirrored by that of England striker Rashford who has scored 16 Premier League goals and 29 in all competitions.
Rashford’s tally has made him United’s top scorer in a single season since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013. McCarthy shot to stardom with his brace of goals against his now employers while playing for FC Porto in the 2004 Champions League.
The former Ajax striker scored 46 goals in 85 appearances for Porto before moving to the Premier League with Blackburn and then West Ham United. After retiring, McCarthy began his coaching career in native South Africa before being drafted in to join Ten Hag’s team as a forwards coach at Old Trafford last July.
McCarthy has been tasked with improving the squad’s forwards and has been credited with playing a huge part in Rashford’s success this season. But in an interview with South African publication iDiski Times, talking about the secret behind Rashford’s performances, the coach refused to take all the credit
He said: “That’s not just down to me. We are a team. Like I always have said to everyone ‘there’s no I in team’. When we do things, we do things as a collective.
“We try and achieve the best that we possibly can. So all the coaches contribute. Everyone has their function in the team to try and just make the team have success and that.” Ten Hag has previously praised McCarthy for the work he has done with Rashford.

The United boss said: “I think the most important is the way of playing, that gives him [Rashford] a base, gives him a structure, the way of play is in his favour because I knew his skills and then you also being staff around who can make it better and make it progress.
“I thought we needed one on the staff who is specific and responsible for strikers, Benni is doing a good job. I think the staff has a good balance and we do it together, it’s not only about Benni McCarthy, all have specific jobs in our staff. There’s a good vibe, they challenge each other, it’s a total package, and it’s not about one person.”
