Man Utd chiefs ’embarrassed’ by Luke Shaw’s ref comments but he avoids ban
Luke Shaw could have landed in trouble for his comments after Manchester United’s draw – but a legislation loophole helped him out.
The Red Devils defender claimed that referee Stuart Attwell “told” Harry Maguire he was denying them a penalty following Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi’s handball as it could cause controversy.
It saw the club backtrack on their position the following day, claiming that the 25-year-old “misheard” the match official.
And The Sun have now reported that Shaw may escape disciplinary action but has caused “embarrassment” among club chiefs.
According to Rule E3 (1) of the FA regulations, a comment about a match official that “implies bias or attacks their integrity” leaves a player open to misconduct.
But officials at the FA reviewing the footage of Shaw’s interview has determined that there is no breach of the terms, with the same conclusion also being drawn by referee representatives PGMOL.
The report states that they believed there was “insufficient evidence” to show the Englishman was questioning Attwell’s integrity.
It means that the full-back, who has enjoyed a revival in form this season, has avoided a two-match ban for his comments.
He may get a tongue-lashing at Carrington, though, as chiefs at the club are understood to be “embarrassed” by the incident.
And the same applies to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who said in his interview that the referee had been influenced by an article on Chelsea’s website pointing out Maguire’s clashes with match officials.
Shaw left Sky Sports viewers stunned when he brought up the incident in his post-match interview at Stamford Bridge.
He said: “I think at the time I saw a handball. I didn't know if was Mason or Callum.

“I didn't even know there was a potential check. I don't know why they stopped it if it's not going to be a pen.
“The ref even said to H [Harry Maguire] if it's a pen then it's going to cause a lot of talk about it after. So I don't know what happened there. H got told it was a pen. I'm not sure.
“I don't understand. If it's going to stop you think it's going to be a pen because we had the ball, we were attacking.
“I'm not going to moan about it because I don't think either team did enough to win.”
