Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward needs to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if he wants to end the club’s wait for a Premier League title, according to former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley. Solskjaer has led United to second in the table ahead of tonight’s trip to Crystal Palace. The Norwegian is yet to win a trophy as Red Devils boss since being first appointed as an interim in December 2018.
United were briefly top of the table earlier this year before a poor run of results, combined with Manchester City’s stunning form, saw title hopes go up in smoke.
Burley believes United’s success this season has largely been down to the drop off from reigning champions Liverpool, as well as the struggles at Chelsea.
However, the pundit can only see Liverpool and Chelsea improving from next season and therefore does not think Solskjaer is the right manager for the Red Devils to challenge those two clubs as well as City.
“My stance on United and their manager has never changed and it certainly doesn’t now,” Burley told ESPN FC.

“I think long term they need a managerial change there, as well as a personnel change.
“The other way to look at it is it’s Manchester United, so whether they’re second, third or fourth, really it is irrelevant. This is a club that should be aiming for first.
“I know City and Liverpool have been difficult teams to gauge yourself against but trust me, Liverpool will bounce back and they will go again, Chelsea will be stronger, City are not going to go away.
“So there are teams around there that are going to pile the pressure on Man United.”

Burley believes United’s eight-year wait for a title could go on much longer if major changes are not made.
However, he does not think the likes of Woodward will make the right decisions.
He continued: “I think if they don’t make the right decisions in terms of who they have in the stewardship of their club, then I think it’s going to be a long, long time before they are winning the league.
“That’s not just on results and league standing, that’s performance as well.
“It can’t always be a penalty and a Bruno Fernandes great performance. There has to be other strings to their bow.
“I just don’t see it, I don’t think we are going to see another season where some of these big clubs falter like they have, and I’m talking about Liverpool.
“Their season has been unprecedented with injuries, Chelsea have sacked their manager, and I think United have got some big decisions to make.
“Is keeping Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the right thing to do? And I think that is what they will do, United.
“And is finishing second and being also-rans once again going to be good enough for the club?
“And I think the answer for them at the moment will be yes.”
