Man Utd chief Richard Arnold urged to quit after Mason Greenwood saga ends
Countdown co-presenter Rachel Riley wants to see Richard Arnold step down as Manchester United’s chief executive over his role in the Mason Greenwood saga. United were bringing their own investigation into allegations against Greenwood to a close this summer when reports suggested the club were leaning towards reintegrating him into the first team.
The news led to a huge backlash from not only United fans but football supporters up and down the country. Arnold was said to be the one to be making the final decision on Greenwood’s future with the chief executive reportedly putting a plan in place for the striker’s return.
But the club appeared to reverse their original plan to bring Greenwood back in from the cold this week as they announced the striker would not be returning to the club again. Gary Neville was among several people who said it was the right decision, although United have come under fire for how they handled the process.
Greenwood and United both put out statements stating the striker was cleared of charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. The charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service earlier this year. Riley was one of the most vocal speaking out against Greenwood returning to United during the club’s investigation and the Countdown presenter called the whole saga a “disgrace”.
“The statement that was put out proclaimed someone innocent from a position that they didn’t have any authority to do,” she told The News Agent podcast. “That was way beyond the remit of Manchester United to even look into the criminal guilt or innocence, never mind the civil level of guilt or innocence.
“I think it’s gaslighting for people to have two statements saying, Mason Greenwood himself saying he’s been cleared of all charges, which is not the case, the claims were dropped because the key witness dropped out, and they [United] claim new evidence.

“It puts wind in the sails of people who think they can get away with abuse everywhere. And I think for victims, it’s a slap in the face. It says you’re better to keep quiet.
“I’ve never been more ashamed of the club. I think it’s just a disgrace. And they had another opportunity to make it right, make a good statement and they have just greenlighted the abuse that’s been going on on social media.”Riley was then asked whether she thought the whole saga should see Arnold consider his own future at the club.
She replied: “Yes I do.”
