Manchester United chief executive Richard Arnold is siding with Ralf Rangnick’s recommendation for the club’s next permanent manager, according to reports. Many United players would like to see Mauricio Pochettino come in to replace Rangnick when his interim spell comes to an end. But Arnold has come round to the idea that Ajax boss Erik ten Hag is the right man for the Red Devils.

United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last November but immediately stated they would look to bring in an interim boss while they sought out the perfect long-term candidate.

Rangnick was drafted in on the proviso that he would take up a consultancy role at the end of the season.

The German will therefore give his opinion on who he thinks would be the right manager for United.

And it appears the former RB Leipzig boss may have got his way.

The Sun reports that United CEO Arnold agrees with Rangnick that Ten Hag is the best person for the role.

Arnold only moved into his role on February 1, replacing Ed Woodward.

Woodward wanted to bring in Pochettino to replace Solskjaer in November.

However, Paris Saint-Germain were not willing to let the Argentine leave mid-season.

Many of the United squad would prefer to see Pochettino come into the club.

But Rangnick has won over Arnold with his opinion on Ten Hag.

Ten Hag has been Ajax boss since 2017 and famously led the club to the semi-final of the Champions League in 2019 before a dramatic last-gasp defeat to Pochettino’s Tottenham.

The Dutchman has won two Eredivisie titles in his reign at Ajax and is well placed to make it three this season.

If United are starting to get their house in order off the pitch, it is far from the case on it.

They again limped to a 1-1 draw at home to Southampton on Saturday.

Rangnick’s side started brightly but were unable to build on Jadon Sancho’s first Old Trafford goal.

United sit fifth in the Premier League table, though both Arsenal and Tottenham below them have multiple games in hand in the quest for the top four.

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson believes Rangnick should lose his role as a consultant if he cannot secure Champions League football.

“I don’t see him being there,” Merson said on Soccer Saturday.

“I think the way it’s going at the moment, if they don’t get in the top four I’ll be shocked if he went upstairs.

“I know that’s part of the deal now but it’s not a good thing for me.”
