Man Utd can use Mason Greenwood as bait for a perfect summer swap

Attempted rape charge against Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood dropped

Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood is reportedly a transfer target for AC Milan. The Serie A giants are said to admire the 21-year-old for his ‘technical ability’, at a time when his Old Trafford future is up in the air. And with Erik ten Hag having interest in Rafael Leao, a swap deal could be there to be done.

Greenwood hasn’t played for United since a dramatic 1-0 victory over West Ham in January last year.

And it emerged on Saturday that the forward was potentially looking at playing abroad, with the youngster keen to continue his footballing career.

United still haven’t decided over what to do with Greenwood, who had charges dropped against him back in February.

But it’s feasible he’ll leave Old Trafford, with AC Milan seemingly at the front of the queue when it comes to potential suitors.

United want to reinforce their attack this summer.

And while a centre-forward, fresh midfielder and new right-back are all priorities, they could arguably do with another winger as well.

Marcus Rashford has obviously been impressive this season, with the England international bagging 28 goals across all competitions.

But Ten Hag’s wants the supporting cast to step up and, so far, they continue to be far too inconsistent for the 53-year-old’s liking.

Jadon Sancho has struggled for consistency ever since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund back in the summer transfer window of 2021.

Antony has blown hot and cold ever since touching down from Ajax last year.

And Alejandro Garnacho, at the age of 18, is arguably still far too young to start every game for the club.

United have longstanding interest in Leao and, with AC Milan keen on Greenwood, a swap deal could suit both parties.

The Portugal international was admired back in January, with Ten Hag hunting a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo at that time.

In the end, United didn’t have the finances required to land Leao – with Wout Weghorst being recruited instead.

But interest is there and it’s possible the Red Devils will look to organise a swap deal that would see them acquire the Portugal forward.

Should Leao arrive from Milan, he’d become the club’s fifth signing from Serie A since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Matteo Darmian was the first, with the right-back touching down from Torino in 2015 when Louis van Gaal ruled the roost.

Sergio Romero followed that summer, with the Argentina international proving to be a safe presence between the sticks during his time in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho opted to raid Juventus for Paul Pogba upon taking the United job in 2016.

And, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United turned to Italy for the likes of Amad and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Regarding Greenwood, meanwhile, Ten Hag said back in February the club couldn’t afford to be distracted by the youngster’s situation.

“It’s really important but sometimes you get issues,” he said. “Then as a club and team you have to deal with it.

“We have standards and values. We have to live along those high standards and values and that gives a base if you have a good culture and spirit.

“That’s our job, not to get distracted by anything. We are human beings and sometimes there are issues, we are not like robots, but we have to focus on our job.

“We have so many games so we don’t have time to get distracted by anything. It’s not easy but that is our job.”
