Man Utd boss Solskjaer’s snub for Liverpool FA Cup tie suggests transfer decision is made
Man Utd: Solskjaer confident forwards can be match for all
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested one transfer is already on the way after a glaring omission from his squad to take on Liverpool in the FA Cup. The old rivals will face off at Old Trafford in a tantalising tie.
United star Jesse Lingard looks set for the exit door after the latest snub from the squad with the club set to take on Liverpool in the FA Cup.
The Red Devils are looking to make it through the fourth round to set up a tie against West Ham.
But they must first come through a tough test at Old Trafford this afternoon when Liverpool come to town in an enthralling contest.
United are in brilliant form this season, last losing a match on November 1 when they were defeated by Arsenal.
Since then, Solskjaer has navigated the club to the top of the Premier League – ahead of the likes of Manchester City, Leicester and Liverpool.
But they have done so largely without the services of Lingard, who has been ostracised by the Norweigan.
A transfer away has been touted but a lack of interest has hindered a departure, though Sheffield United have been strongly linked with the midfielder.
And after being left out of the squad to face Liverpool, it appears his time at Old Trafford is coming to an end.
The 28-year-old hired Mino Raiola as his agent last January and interest from Serie A grew with his connections in Italy prevalant.
But it remains to be seen whether the England international will leave his boyhood club this month with transfers difficult to pull off during the coronavirus pandemic.
Regardless, the lack of opportunity under Solskjaer this season should speed up a decision from both the club and the player’s point of view.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are looking to get their campaign back on track after some derisory form in recent weeks.
The champions have seen their recent results decline after losses to Southampton and Burnley already this calendar year.
The Clarets defeat has rankled Jurgen Klopp, who has told his squad to see it as a turning point in their season.
He said: “When I think back I can’t find a reason why we lost that game but we lost it.
“It happened and sometimes you need a really low point to change things properly and that’s for sure [what] we will go for now.
“If we would have won in a bad game the world would have said, ‘OK, it’s not the football they usually play but they are back on the result path’, but in the long term it would not help.
“It can be a real help if we use it. I can imagine what a lot of people think about us in the moment.”
