Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been urged to strip Harry Maguire of the club captaincy. Maguire has come under criticism for his performances this season. United have kept just one clean sheet in all competitions and the England defender has been a regular at the back.

Solskjaer appointed Maguire as club captain in January 2020, when it became clear Ashley Young was going to leave for Inter Milan.

It came just six months after his £80million arrival from Leicester City.

United legend Paul Parker believes the armband was given to Maguire too early.

And he claims the 28-year-old has plenty of work to do on his own game rather than having the extra burden of the captaincy.

“Manchester United gave Harry Maguire the captain’s armband too early,” Parker told BonusCodeBets.

“It surprised a lot of people; it didn’t make any sense and it hasn’t been a good fit from day one.

“With captains, it isn’t about who has the biggest transfer fee or who’s the best player.

“There’s much more to it than that. He isn’t the right player to be a captain of Manchester United at this moment in time and he has a lot in his game that needs rectifying.”

Maguire missed two matches due to injury earlier this season before returning to face former side Leicester.

He was poor at the King Power as Leicester ran out 4-2 winners.

Parker says fitness is huge for Maguire and he isn’t right mentally if he is not at his sharpest.

The former full-back added: “He’s one of those players that, as that Leicester fixture showed, has to be 100 per cent physically, otherwise he isn’t right in the head.

“That’s why he was so bad in that game. I’m just wondering if he pushed to play in that game because it was his old club and he wanted to play in front of the fans there as a Manchester United player.”

Parker’s former United team-mate Roy Keane was also critical of Maguire last weekend.

Keane mocked Maguire for speaking like a robot to the press after the 5-0 loss to rivals Liverpool.

He said on Sky Sports: “What Man United have always had over the years – whatever about talented players – they’ve had players with character and personalities.

“I don’t see it with this group. I heard Maguire talking during the week, he was like a robot.

“He was like, ‘Err, uh, err, apologies to the fans.’ No emotion behind it.”
