Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick will lose his consultancy role at the club if he cannot secure Champions League qualification for next season, reckons former Arsenal star Paul Merson. Rangnick is currently in temporary charge of United before moving upstairs to take up a role as a consultant for the next two years.
United will appoint a permanent successor to Rangnick in the summer.
Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag are among the candidates linked with the Old Trafford vacancy.
Rangnick will likely have an input on who the next manager will be.
But Merson thinks failing to finish in the Premier League top four would spell the end of the German’s time at the club.

He claims he would be “shocked” if Rangnick stays and United are not in the Champions League next season.
“I just don’t see the happiness there,” Merson said on Soccer Saturday.
“I hear so much coming out of Man United at the moment, which is just extraordinary for me.
“It never happened before and that’s my worry. I don’t see him being there.

“I think the way it’s going at the moment, if they don’t get in the top four I’ll be shocked if he went upstairs.
“I know that’s part of the deal now but it’s not a good thing for me.”
United always intended to appoint an interim boss following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last November.
Michael Carrick took caretaker charge for a couple of matches before Rangnick stepped into the role.
But Merson cannot believe United have not splashed the cash on their top target mid-season.
He continued: “I think this needs to be nipped in the bud sooner rather than later at Man United, I just can’t believe what they’re doing.
“They’re just waiting for next season to bring in a new manager. There’s a lot of work to be done at Man United, this is not just ‘bring a new manager in and let’s go next season’ – they’re a million miles off and I think things have to change very quickly.
“I’d have had someone in as soon as possible. You pay £70-80million for football players and some of them don’t even play – why wouldn’t you break the bank for managers?
“If you need to get a manager out of a club. In my opinion, they’re very important.”
