Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag told he’s about to make major transfer mistake
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been firmly told that it would be a mistake to sign Mason Mount. Red Devils legend Andy Cole says the Chelsea star is not the calibre of player his former club should be pursuing this summer.
United are strong favourites to sign Mount in this window. He is widely reported to have agreed personal terms with the Old Trafford side.
Chelsea are wanting up to £80million for the former academy graduate. Mount has just a year remaining on his contract with the Blues and has rejected all offers of renewal so far.
United are baulking at Chelsea’s asking price, with their first offer set to be around £50m. But Cole thinks they shouldn’t be pursuing the England international at all.

The former striker claims treble-winners Manchester City would not be interested in Mount. Cole believes that should give United an indicator that the 24-year-old is not the level of player they should be targeting.
Cole told Punters.Pub: “Would Manchester City look to bring in a player like Mason Mount to make them better? You’ve got to look at players and say, right, would Man City try and buy this player? Because if you’re going to close the gap, you can’t be buying players that are not going to improve you.
“That’s the way I look at things. For Mount not to be getting in the Chelsea team, you have to think why that is. Because it’s not as if Chelsea are pulling up any trees to keep hold of him.”
United’s summer budget remains uncertain due to their ongoing takeover saga. The signing of Mount could take a big chunk out of that budget which Cole believes would not be a wise move.

United are also interested in signing Tottenham striker Harry Kane. However, Cole says that wouldn’t be enough to make Ten Hag’s side title contenders.
He added: “Bringing one player into score goals is not going to win you the league. Ultimately, Kane would make Manchester United better, but I’m not going to buy into the narrative that if United get Harry Kane, they’ve got a good chance to win the league.
“If one player is going to make such a difference, why doesn’t every team in the top four just buy one star player each year? Because it’s not that easy. It’s definitely not that easy.
“Manchester City have dominated the league, and it’s not just about Erling Haaland getting all the goals he’s got. If you look at where the goals are coming from now, at the moment, a lot are coming from the midfield.”
