Man Utd back-up transfer plan at risk of falling apart as shortlist shrinks
Erik ten Hag has every right to start worrying about Manchester United’s delay in signing another attacker this summer as the transfer window enters its final month. The United boss gave a clear message to the club’s board this week to get a deal over the line for an attacker.
Deals for Mason Mount and Andre Onana were wrapped up relatively quickly and the pair have already begun to settle into Ten Hag’s pre-season team. But they’re still without a recognised central attacker as Jadon Sancho was used as a makeshift false nine in their recent friendly against Arsenal.
Rasmus Hojlund remains United’s top target and the Atalanta forward reportedly favours a move to Old Trafford over anywhere else. However, Atalanta’s £80million price tag is proving too much for United and alternative options are being considered.
It’s been suggested that United may even opt against signing a recognised central striker. Mohammed Kudus is one the back-up options being considered at United with Ajax seemingly willing to sell the Ghana international.
But United aren’t the only club interested in Kudus and Chelsea appear to be moving forward with a move for the 22-year-old. The Blues have sold a host of players this summer already to trim down their bloated squad and raise some much-needed funds.
It’s been relatively quiet for incomings at Chelsea so far by their standards, but Kudus appears to be a top target to help switch things up. Kudus’ versatility makes him an attractive option for Chelsea, who would seemingly look to deploy him more in a midfield role.

For United, the Ghanian star would be more of an attacking option but they’ll have to move quickly if they’re to snap him up. Hojlund remains the priority for now, but United will need to find out an answer soon on whether a deal can be struck for the Dane.
If a move is proving too much then United will have to switch their attentions elsewhere, but leaving it so late in the window means United will likely have to look further down their alternative shortlist.
Time is running out for Ten Hag’s side with the Premier League season now fast approaching. And the United boss will no doubt be growing concerned each day that goes by that a forward isn’t signed.
