Manchester United and Liverpool look set to ramp up their efforts to sign West Ham star Declan Rice. It comes after contact was made with his agent following the news that Chelsea had cooled their interest in the England international after the dismissal of Frank Lampard.

Manchester United and Liverpool have contacted Rice’s agent over a potential transfer in the summer.

It comes after Chelsea called off their raid on the West Ham ace following the dismissal of Lampard.

The Blues legend was axed as manager last month after a poor run of form in the Premier League.

Lampard had made Rice his personal top target at Stamford Bridge but failed to convince the club to sign back a player they released at 14.

As a result, with the ex-England midfielder out of the door, it saw their interest in Rice cool.

But while West Ham may breathe a sigh of relief, there are more clubs ready to ramp up their efforts.

According to transfer expert Ian McGarry on the Transfer Window Podcast, both United and Liverpool have contacted his agent.

“He is no longer on the transfer list of recruitment possibilities for the Stamford Bridge club, but he has certainly roused the interest of Liverpool and Manchester United,” McGarry said.

“Both of whom have expressed interest to Rice’s agent as we understand and they have asked to be kept informed of any offers made for the England international.”

Meanwhile, West Ham are still hoping Rice will extend his contract in east London.

He has become a pivotal member of David Moyes’ side, taking over as captain as Mark Noble’s influence in the first-team dwindles.

The 22-year-old has been commended as one of the best young defensive midfielders in the Premier League.

Fabinho currently holds that role at Liverpool, though with Virgil van Dijk’s injury the Brazilian has been asked to drop back into defence.

But with Georginio Wijnaldum’s contract expiring, the Reds are in the market for a midfielder.

It could be argued that United need Rice’s services more, with Nemanja Matic getting to the end of his career and Fred not up the same task as the Serbian’s.
