Manchester United and Chelsea have been warned that Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo is not worth the potential £70million fee that has been reported for the Ecuadorian World Cup star. Both Erik ten Hag and Graham Potter’s sides have been linked with a move for the 21-year-old, while Newcastle are also said to be interested in the all-action midfielder.
Caicedo’s performances in the Premier League have alerted the attention of several top clubs, though Brighton have made multiple recent sales to the traditional top-six and will continue to play hardball and demand a big fee for Caicedo.
Former Tottenham and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes he could even go for as much as £70m, though the stopper has warned interested parties that he does not “warrant” going for that much.
“Look, a player’s price is determined by the bidders,” Robinson told Football Insider. “Caicedo is a brilliant young player. He is only going to get better. I am not surprised that top clubs are looking at him. If the top clubs want him his price is going to be very high. I can see him going for £60-£70million.
“If Newcastle are going to be in a bidding war with a Man United or a Chelsea then they are going to have to pay top dollar. All of those clubs can pay the high prices though. Brighton will hold out for the best possible fee. In truth, I don’t think Caicedo has done enough to warrant going for £70m but a club will pay that for him. This is the top level of English football.”
Blues boss Potter knows Caicedo well after their time together on the south coast, and his side along with United, Newcastle and Liverpool have all been linked with potential moves to reinforce their midfield options. Brighton CEO Paul Garber recently hinted that the Seagulls could be forced into sales as they will not break their wage structure in order to keep their stars.

“We have to compete in a different way to the traditional top six, top seven clubs, who have much bigger resources and budgets. They can buy at different levels of the market,” Barber told the Albion Roar Podcast.
“They can actually pay the kind of salaries that keep players at the club for longer and what we are not going to do is bust our wage structure just to be able to keep a player for another year, it doesn’t make any sense.
“Because unfortunately if you do that, what you actually do is bust your wage structure completely. You don’t just have one or two players on the highest possible wages, you have 10, 12, 14, 15, and then suddenly that is how a club starts getting into the kind of difficulties you hear and read about far too often.”
