Manchester United look set to abandon their quest to land Erling Haaland as the Borussia Dortmund superstar apparently favours a move to Real Madrid. Haaland has been tipped to leave his current club in the summer as a whole host of European powerhouses circle.

Haaland signed for Dortmund at the start of 2020 and has become one of the best strikers in the world during his time at Signal Iduna Park.

The 21-year-old has scored an incredible 79 goals in 78 games during his time in Germany, but reportedly has a release clause in his contract which will allow him to move on for £62.75million at the end of the campaign.

If Haaland does move to Madrid it would be a huge blow for the Red Devils, who have already missed out on signing him once before.

But it could be good news for some of United’s current players. Express Sport takes a look at four players who could benefit from Haaland going elsewhere.

Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford has endured a difficult season after missing a penalty for England in the final of Euro 2020 last summer before being forced to sit out the open two months of the campaign after undergoing a shoulder operation.

The forward has only found the back of the net three times and provided one assist in his 12 appearances this term.

Rashford may have been overshadowed by the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer.

So surely he wouldn’t excel with another high-profile player getting all the attention in Manchester.

Mason Greenwood

Mason Greenwood has been tipped to lead United’s forward line in the years to come after excelling in a front three when given an opportunity to impress.

But Haaland’s arrival would have knocked the 20-year-old down the Old Trafford pecking order.

Greenwood has already made a remarkable 128 first-team appearances for the Red Devils, despite his young age.

So he may feel he can kick on again next season in the absence of Haaland given he has long-term aspirations to be United’s first-choice centre-forward.

Charlie McNeil

United under-23s prodigy Charlie McNeil has been tipped to achieve big things at the club if he can command a first-team place in the future.

The forward has racked-up 27 goals in 25 under-18s matches during his time at the north west club.

The 18-year-old, who has four caps for the England under-16s team, previously spent time with Liverpool and Manchester City before joining his current club.

And his pathway to the first team is likely to be smoother without Haaland.

Joe Hugill

Another youngster hoping to make his mark on the Red Devils is Joe Hugill, who arrived from Sunderland in the summer of 2020.

The 18-year-old has notched 12 goals in 31 matches for the under-23s to add to his nine goals in seven games for the under-18s.

Hugill is seen as a star of the future and could well be given his opportunity to impress on the big stage sooner rather than later without Haaland in his way.
