Man United, Liverpool and Tottenham 'to go head-to-head for Sabitzer'

Man United, Liverpool and Tottenham ‘to go head-to-head for RB Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer’ this summer… with Bundesliga club ‘holding out for £36m’ for star midfielder

  • RB Leipzig midfielder Marcel Sabitzer is attracting lots of interest this summer
  • Sabitzer’s deal expires in 2022 and Leipzig don’t want to lose him for nothing
  • Reports in Germany say Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham are keen

Marcel Sabitzer is ready to cause a Premier League scramble this summer with Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham all reportedly in position to make a move for him.

The RB Leipzig captain has established himself as one of Europe’s accomplished central midfielders in recent seasons.

With his contract expiring in June 2022 and RB Leipzig reluctant to lose him for nothing, German outlet Bild report that the Premier League trio are jostling for his signature.

The 27-year-old has continued his development and has played well this season with seven goals and six assists in 31 games.

He has developed immensely under boss Julian Nagelsmann and has found himself of the radar of English clubs for some time.

Tottenham have been reported as long-term admirers and Bild report north London ‘is the most likely’ destination, should Sabitzer press for a move to England.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are looking for a midfielder to replace Georginio Wijnaldum who looks set to depart on a free in the summer while United are expected to have another busy summer bolstering their squad.

Leipzig are believed to be holding out for €42million (£36million) despite the midfielder preparing to enter the final 12 months of his contract.

Sabitzer’s stock has risen significantly in recent years and he has seven goals so far this season

Speaking to Bild earlier this month on his future, the RB Leipzig captain was unmoved on Premier League links.

‘It has become popular to ask players about their future as soon as they enter the final 18 months of their contract,’ he said.

‘But that doesn’t mean that everything has to be decided at that moment.

‘Those in my inner circle know what I’m thinking. But I’m not stressed about it. I feel good in Leipzig and at the club, plus we’re successful.’

So much interest in him means Sabitzer is likely to be offered a significant pay hike on his RB Leipzig salary if he swaps Germany for England.

Liverpool, who Sabitzer faced in the Champions League this year, are said to be watching him

But he has already insisted money will not be a factor in deciding his future.

‘Salary is not my main focus right now,’ he added to Bild

‘I’m doing well enough, I don’t have to worry about it every day. I don’t play football to build a money bin after my career. I play for success. I’ve always been a winner, and I want to win trophies.’

Sabitzer joined RB Leipzig in 2014 and has gone on to make more than 160 appearances for the German side, establishing himself as their captain under Nagelsmann.
