Manchester United have been dealt a big injury blow after confirming that Paul Pogba will miss the next ‘few weeks’ of action with games coming thick and fast.

Pogba was forced off late on in the opening period of the entertaining 3-3 draw against Everton in the Premier League at Old Trafford, in which he was replaced by Fred.

After the 27-year-old went for a scan on the issue, United have since confirmed the extent of the damage and it comes as a big blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, who are still fighting on most fronts.

United confirmed on Monday: ‘A scan was required to assess the extent of the damage and, unfortunately, Pogba now faces an enforced spell on the sidelines with key games at home and abroad coming up.’

The in-form Frenchman will miss a number of crunch games for United both domestically and in Europe, including the Europa League last-32 tie against Real Sociedad.

Solskjaer said: ‘It’s an injury that will take a few weeks to heal. He’s just started his recovery, working with the medical staff and we’ll get him back as soon and as safely as we can.

‘Of course, Paul has been very important for us and we’re not going to take any risks. (So it is) a few weeks definitely.

‘You never want to be injured and, especially, now Paul was really finding his form and enjoying his football. 

‘For us, we just have to take as many points and wins as possible, when you lose players. We’ve been very healthy and strong for a long period so we can’t moan too much.’

While United gave a broad timeframe over his recovery, it is unclear currently just when exactly Pogba will return. 

After facing Real Sociedad in the second-leg of their European last-32 tie at Old Trafford on February 25, United face two huge games in the Premier League.

United, who are second in the top-flight, take on Chelsea away before making the short trip to rivals and league leaders Manchester City on March 6.

United will be desperate Pogba returns in time for those crunch Premier League clashes with the football calendar reaching the business end of the season.  

Pogba had just started to show signs of his best form at Old Trafford, popping up with vital goals against Burnley and Fulham to help United move up to second in the Premier League.

The news will come as a huge blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with games coming thick and fast
