Manchester United’s continued last-minute antics almost always happens to occur via Cristiano Ronaldo. Having signed for £20million in the summer, they have massively benefited from his arrival – although the scenario could have been completely different had he famously moved to Manchester City instead.

A frantic day in the last week of the summer transfer window saw Ronaldo heavily linked to City in a shock move.

However, United swooped for his signing and just four hours later had announced his return to Old Trafford despite many believing he would sign for the blue half of Manchester.

Having rejoined United 12 years after he left for Real Madrid, the striker has continued where he left off with nine goals in just 11 games for the Red Devils.

The Portugal star has already scored three late winners in the Champions League so far and should he score another late winner in Saturday’s Manchester derby, City chiefs will rue the decision not to sign him.

The Daily Star reports that City have since denied being interested in Ronaldo.

But it is understood the champions had agreed a fee with Juventus believed to be £25m, as well as personal terms with the striker, whilst the paperwork had been drawn up.

And this could come back to haunt Pep Guardiola’s men at Old Trafford.

City currently sit five points off the summit of the table, three points ahead of United.

And if it wasn’t for Ronaldo consistently bailing United out of trouble, the gap would be much bigger – something which manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer alluded to after United’s 2-2 draw against Atalanta on Tuesday.

“He’s incredible,” Solskjaer said to beIN Sports.

“And if there’s anyone you want the ball to fall to in the last minute, it’s him.

“He’s the best goalscorer that’s alive, and it’s hard for me to say that because he just went past me with these two goals.

“Now he’s got one more goal for Manchester United than me, but well done. You know that last goal there must be a Michael Jordan moment when he wins championships in extra time.”

Ronaldo will look to add to his tally of four goals in seven games in the Manchester derby.
