Manchester City beat Real Madrid 4-3 in a thrilling Champions League semi-final first leg clash at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night. Express Sport provides the hosts’ player ratings as Pep Guardiola and Co. took one step closer to their second successive final.

Ederson – 5

Conceded three but won’t draw too much criticism due to the quality of Real’s goals.

John Stones – 5

A difficult one to rate after overcoming doubts to start. Played in an unnatural right-back position and didn’t put much of a foot wrong before being forced off after 36 minutes.

Ruben Dias – 6

Not his most formidable of performances but was important to Man City’s build-up play. Maintained a 90 per cent pass accuracy and completed six of seven attempted long balls.

Aymeric Laporte – 6

Enjoyed a solid first half, but his showing dipped, and he needlessly conceded Real’s penalty through a raised arm.

Oleksandr Zinchenko – 7

Most of Real’s joy came from the opposite side of the pitch, and he recorded his second assist in as many games.

Rodri – 7

Took 105 touches, maintained a 92 per cent pass accuracy and won all five of his aerial duels. Didn’t look out of place in a star-studded midfield battle.

Kevin De Bruyne – 8

Contributed to a sensational start with his 11th and 12th goal contributions in his last 10 games.

Bernardo Silva – 7

Bagged the decisive goal of the game with a stunning strike and won seven of his 12 ground duels.

Riyad Mahrez – 7

Consistently looked a threat on the right flank and showcased his dangerous crossing ability.

Phil Foden – 7

Didn’t have a stand-out game but netted his 75th career goal with an emphatic second-half header.

Gabriel Jesus – 7

Continued his hot streak of form with an early goal to put the hosts 2-0 up. Could be one of the first names on Guardiola’s team sheet in the second leg.

SUBSTITUTES

Fernandinho – 7

Replaced Stones early in the game and played in an alien right-back position. Was undone by Vinicius’ brilliance in the second half but produced a bit of class of his own to tee up Foden’s header.

Raheem Sterling – 5

Didn’t have much of a say as an outstanding game trickled to a close – seems to have been leapfrogged by Jesus in Guardiola’s pecking order.
